A robotic myomectomy is a procedure that can give you relief from the pain and excessive bleeding of uterine fibroids. Let’s find out more about this procedure including the recovery time for a da Vinci myomectomy.
Common Treatments for Fibroids
Depending on how severe your fibroid symptoms are, Dr. Gregory Eads may offer several options to treat them.
- Taking a wait and see approach.
- Prescribing medications to shrink the fibroids.
- A procedure to cut off the blood supply to the fibroids called embolization.
- Hysterectomy to remove both your fibroids and uterus.
- Myomectomy surgery removes the fibroids and preserves the uterus. This can be done with open surgery using one large incision, or it can be accomplished via minimally invasive surgery with several tiny incisions.
If you and your physician decide to choose a robotic-assisted surgery, it is a minimally invasive procedure using tiny incisions to remove the fibroids.
What is a da Vinci Myomectomy?
With this procedure, your surgeon sits at a console next to you and performs the operation. A camera is used which provides 3D high definition visuals inside your body. Every hand movement your surgeon makes occurs in real time to bend and rotate the instruments with precision.
Recovery and Major Benefits of da Vinci Myomectomy
Although this procedure is minimally invasive, it is still major surgery and performed under general anesthesia. Expect to remain in the hospital for one night after surgery.
The da Vinci surgical system uses smaller incisions, provides less pain, and less blood. You are able to return to normal activities faster than other types of surgery.
Two to four weeks is a typical recovery time with restrictions on any strenuous exercise or heavy lifting. You are encouraged to walk and do light exercise after the procedure to prevent possible blood clots.
You can return to work when you feel ready depending upon your job, and you can resume having sexual intercourse when you feel comfortable.
You may have some minor pain after surgery, so let Dr. Eads know, and you can be prescribed medication if needed.
The surgery may prevent any further pain, but be advised that fibroids can grow back.
